Wedding Photo Size – this post has been inspired by a recent requests from several clients to crop my photos to a certain size.  Now I am more than happy to do this, and will not charge for it. Afterall with Adobe Photoshop, it is pretty easy to do.

What my clients didn’t understand however is the relationship between sizes of crops and the original image.

Now however we have many more print sizes, and they just don’t fit the same 1 : 1.5 ratio any more – hence the need to crop!

A standard popular size now is 7″ x 5″ which is a 1.4 (7/5), moving up a 10″ x 8″ is a also popular and that is 1 : 1.25 (10/8) and the list goes on.  If the size of photo you want doesn’t fit into that nice 1 : 1.5  you are going to have to loose some of the original image.

This isn’t just Canon by the way – it is every camera produced!

When you are taking your photographs I can make a safe bet that the subject will be smack in the middle of the frame, so when you loose bits on the edge you don’t care.  When I or another professional take a photograph we may move the subject to the left, right, top or bottom of the frame to give the photograph a more pleasing view. (This is known as the Rule of Thirds – more on this in another blog.).  What that does is mean that occasionally when I am asked to crop the image I may have to loose some important detail!
