The Planning Stage
The planning stage is crucial in wedding photography.
It's not just about setting a date and time; it's about understanding the couple's vision for their day, their personalities, and their love story.
As a wedding photographer, you need to be able to capture the essence of the couple and their love. This requires a deep understanding of their desires and expectations, which can only be achieved through careful planning and communication.
I achieve that communication by meeting face to face, in all but the extreme cases, with couples before going ahead with a booking. It's not enough to have a Zoom session in my opinion, and a telephone call or email is asking for trouble.
A face-to-face meeting allows me to set out what I can do for the couple, be it part of the planning process or on the day. It sets the time frames and expectations for the couple and allows them to ask the 101 questions they may have to ease their mind before booking. It also gives me a great opportunity to see if I'm a good fit for the couple - because if I'm not, then why would I take the money and photograph a wedding I'm not emotionally invested in.
The Wedding Day
The wedding day is a whirlwind of emotions and moments.
Every moment is precious, from the nervous anticipation of the couple before the ceremony to the euphoria of the first dance.
As a wedding photographer, you need to be there to capture it all. This requires a keen eye for detail, a sense of timing, and the ability to blend into the background to capture candid moments.
Those emotions may go overboard, especially during prep when times start to get pushed, or things go wrong. I'm usually on hand to check stuff like this and step in quietly to help the day go much smoother. There is nothing worse than having one or both of the couples emotionally upset!
During the planning stage, I set out what I be doing on the wedding in regards to types of wedding photographs, and during the pre-wedding shoot, I and the couple will walk the route at the venue or photo location so we know what is going to happen on the day. That pre-wedding shoot is THE most crucial aspect of my business.
Generally, for a UK wedding, the order of the day goes like this:
- Pre-wedding Prep, either or both of the couple may want prep.
- During this time I also do a few quick shots of the venue to set the stage
- The service; either a church, registry office or hotel or potentially another venue
- The Photo session. I split this into a couple of sub stages; groups and couple photos
- The wedding breakfast & speeches
- The first dance
The Post-Wedding Stage
After the wedding, the real work begins.
Sorting through hundreds, if not thousands, of photos to select the best ones can be a daunting task. But it's an essential part of the process.
The chosen photos need to tell the story of the day, capturing the emotions, the moments, and the love. This requires a keen eye for detail, a sense of narrative, and a deep understanding of the couple's love story.
My contract states it will take me a maximum of three (3) weeks to edit and upload your wedding photographs. I'm usually much quicker than this, and get a set of between 30-40 sneaky peeks online within 24 hours.
I use an online gallery called Pic-Time to host my wedding galleries, all of which will usually stay active indefinatley.
The Creation of the Final Album
The final album is more than just a collection of photos; it's a tangible representation of the couple's love story. It's something they will cherish for the rest of their lives.
