Weddings are a big and important day in someone's life, and it is understandable that they want to capture the day in the best possible way. But how much do photography packages cost? Do some wedding photographers charge more than others because of their equipment or set layouts?

It's no secret that weddings can be expensive. The average cost of a wedding in the UK in 2021 was over £16,000 and that's not even including the cost of a professional photographer. So, when it comes to wedding photography, you might be wondering how much you should expect to pay.
The answer isn't always simple. There are a lot of factors that can affect a photographer's prices, from their experience and portfolio to the size and location of your wedding. However, there are two main things that will always affect how much you pay for your wedding photos: value and price.
Value is the biggest factor affecting wedding photographer prices. A skilful photographer who can capture beautiful moments and make you feel relaxed in front of the camera is worth their weight in gold. They'll be able to provide you with stunning photos that you'll cherish for a lifetime, and that's something you can't put a price on.
Price, on the other hand, is all about numbers. How many hours will the photographer be shooting? How many edited photos will you receive? What kind of album or prints do you want? These are all important questions to ask when trying to determine how much you should expect to pay
Reasons for Different Prices for your wedding photography
As a professional wedding photographer, I often get asked how much I charge for my Bristol wedding photography services. There are a lot of factors that can affect pricing, ranging from the experience of the photographer to the number of hours they'll be needed on the big day. In this post, I'll break down some of the most common reasons why wedding photographers charge different prices.
1. Experience Level: Generally speaking, the more experience a photographer has, the higher their rates will be. This is because experienced photographers have a better understanding of light and composition and can typically work faster than those who are just starting out.
I have 17+ years as a full-time mortgage-paying wedding photographer in and around the Bristol area and did my initial photography degree 33+ years ago in the British Army. Compare that level of experience with those new to the profession when looking at who to choose to capture the most important aspects of your day. That isn't to say those newer wedding photographers are not good enough, but when things go wrong, it's the experience of been there, seen that, done that attitude that really comes into play.
2. Number of Hours: The number of hours required for a wedding photography shoot can also affect pricing. If you only need a photographer for a few hours, you may be able to get away with paying less than someone who needs them for an entire day.
Personally, I don't have a set number of hours; but I don't charge an hourly rate either. It's a flat fee for my services regardless of if I'm on-site with you for 5 hours or 10 hours of my average of 17 hours.
Check the photographers who charge extra for staying longer will in fact, stay longer (some don't). Weddings seldom go exactly to plan, things slip, and the time frame moves. If you book a 10 hours wedding photographer and your first dance slips past that 10 hours are you bothered about paying extra?
3. Location: The location of your wedding can also play a role in how much you'll pay for photography services. If your wedding is taking place in a remote area, or if it's during peak season (like summer), you can expect to pay more than if it were taking place in a city or during an off-peak time.
Again this isn't really me. I charge a set price regardless of where the wedding is or what time of the year or day of the week it is. You have a budget and knowing you have a fixed price from me helps you budget more effectively.
4. Equipment: Camera equipment is expensive, very expensive. The latest Canon mirrorless cameras for instance, can go for as much as £4,500. You will be paying for that in the prices you are charged., and the best wedding photographers in and around Bristol will use a minimum of two camera bodies, plus lenses.
That's not to say wedding photography professionals need to use Canlon. Other brands are available such as Nikon, Sony and the personal favourite of Andrew Miller Photography - Fuji. Fuji is also much cheaper!
Choosing the Right Bristol Photographer

A great wedding photographer will show a lot of interest in your wedding and will have lots of ideas to help you get really creative and have the wedding of your dreams. Also, in the case of myself, I end up dressing the bride (putting the dress on, doing it up etc), and that involves a deep level of personal trust.

Take a deep look into what is being offered by each wedding photographer. It is very hard to compare two, three or even more wedding photographers as they will all have a slightly different way of setting out what they include as standard and what they charge extra for.
As a rough guide, look for things like:
- Pre-wedding shoots/engagement shoots
- Wedding albums included
- Number of hours on-site/unlimited time
- Turn around time for your wedding photographs
- Online line galleries
- USB instead of a wedding album
- Stays in the background or chips in and helps during your planning or during the day
- Same day slideshow of your wedding photographs
- Child-friendly (allows your children to play with the cameras under supervision)
