DSLR Photography Training

These are the basic’s that you should know and understand before going any further.  They are the CORE to your understanding how to take great photographs without thinking about it; without having to resort to the ‘P’ mode on your camera and without having to take multiple shots to get the one the works.  It’s about understanding the technical abilities of the camera and yourself and making them work together in harmony.   What it’s not about is the creative side… not yet.  That comes with an understanding of how you take the photograph.

Pre Programme Session

This is a short 1-1 over a couple of cups of coffee in which I discuss with you exactly what it is you want to get out of your programme; go through your choices of modules, assess your preferred approach to learning using a simple yet effective psychometric assessment and talk you through how the programme will work for you.

I then prepare a detailed learning pathway for you so you know exactly what the costs will be upfront and exactly what you will learn.

This pre session is expected to last around 2 hours and is not charged.

Module 1

PHOTOGRAPHY BASICS

Takes you right back to basics and looks at the relationship between ISO (ASA for you older generation film users), Aperture and Shutter Speed. Known as the Exposure Triangle this is the hardest part of photography to understand.

This module is 5 hours and is totally practical.

Module 2

SETTING APERTURE (WHILST STILL IN MANUAL MODE)

This module is designed to take you through using the aperture, whilst still in manual mode, in a more creative way. From a nice smooth blurred background for portraits to front to back sharpens all depends on your choice of aperture.

Andrew will guide you through the often difficult to understand terminology, complete with a little bit of theory, to allow you to look at a scene and decide what aperture you will use to best give you the photograph you have envisioned.

This module is 5 hours and is totally practical.

Module 3

SETTING SHUTTER SPEED (WHILST STILL IN MANUAL MODE)

The shutter speed is often used to capture moving objects; however with a little bit of thought you can use it to give the impression of speed, to stop time, to make time go slowly and to give your photographs a highly professional look – especially if photographing cars, horses galloping, birds in flight, insects etc are your big thing!

This module is 5 hours and is totally practical.

Module 4

GETTING TO GRIPS WITH ISO AND OTHER STUFF

This module looks a few things that are related to the previous modules. We primarily look at ISO (or ASA if you are moving from film) and how ISO affects your photography and images. We look at using ISO creatively and what ISO really means when in real life prints.

We then start to work at putting your knowledge from the previous modules together by looking at a scene and setting the camera settings before you take a picture, light meters to give you a helping hand in difficult situations and lastly using the Exposure Triangle (ISO, Aperture & Shutter speed) in creative environments to give you the photographs you want quickly and easily.

This module is 5 hours and is totally practical.

Module 5

GETTING A HANDLE ON AMBIENT LIGHT

This module is all about light! What it is, where it comes from, what colour it is, how it bounces, how it moves and how you can use it to best effect in your photographs.

We look at the more detailed aspects of ambient light in photography such as back lighting, side lighting, front lighting, multiple light sources, White Balance and the use of ambient natural light as well as the use of artificial light.

This module is 5 hours and is totally practical.

Module 6

INTRODUCTION TO ADOBE LIGHTROOM

Adobe Lightroom is probably the most used editing and catalogue tool in use by photographers both professional, semi professional and hobbiest.

This module will take you through the basics of the various modules within Lightroom; how to import photographs; add your copyright information; add keywords; edit your photographs using the built in ‘Develop’ module, import presets; create your own presets; integrate Lightroom with Adobe Photoshop, export your edited photographs for a range of media and much more.

In short I will show you my workflow for using Lightroom from start to finish!

This module will take place at a 4 star hotel and lunch, tea & coffee throughout the day. You will need to have a laptop with Adobe Lightroom pre installed. (I uses Adobe Lightroom CC though other versions will be pretty much the same)

Module 7

ADOBE PHOTOSHOP FOR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS

This module is all about Adobe Photoshop; the worlds premier photographic editing application. (in my humble opinion!).

In this module we will cover exactly what you need to know (and don’t need to bother to know) with regards to the functions, filters, buttons, gizmos etc to make your wedding photographs stand out from the crowd.

It’s not about whacking a filter (a la Instagram) on a photograph, it’s about turning a photograph into a work of art that your clients will be chuffed to have displayed as a large canvas on their wall.

I’ll go though all the short cuts, tools, tips and my workflow when using Adobe Photoshop and show you how to save time in the editing by shooting specifically to edit in your style.

Also included in the investment are a full set of the actions I have developed and use on a regular basis on my wedding photographs.

Ongoing

FEEDBACK SESSIONS

Throughout the time working with me you will be expected to produce work on your own.  We will spend time going through the work 1-1 and in groups to get peer feedback also.  This is a valuable learning experience.  Constructive Critique is an important aspect of wedding photography; learning your style etc.  It’s not about saying your work is bad… it’s about building on what you have produced so it becomes better

    Fully Qualified Professional Trainer

Andrew is a fully qualified and professional trainer with 25 years of adult training & development experience gained within the British Army and his corporate life before becoming a photographer. (His last full-time role was a Group Learning & Development manager in charge of development of the CEO, senior management teams and individual Directors for a FTSE 100 company)

That means he knows how to get complex messages across in an easy to understand way. He knows how different people learn, not just at different rates but in different ways. In short he knows what he is doing in a training environment.

Andrew is a fully qualified and experienced trainer which includes the following

    • UK Military Train the Trainer (TTT) programme (6-week intensive course)
    • Degree level Adult-Adult (1-1 / 1-many) training qualification
    • Masters Level Coaching & Mentoring with the Institute of Leadership & Management
    • Qualified to administer and use psychometric assessments from the British Psychological Society (BPS)
    • 25 years of training experience within the British Military and National & International Blue Chip organisations.

    • Degree Level Photography Course (via British Army)

    DSLR Photography Training

Before signing up for training workshops with other photographers check to make sure they are qualified to deliver training to groups or on a 1-1 basis.  If not; why not?  Those same professional photographers would moan about the amateurs picking up a camera and photographing a wedding without any training yet fail to see the irony of offering training workshops themselves when they have no training qualifications!
